About

The LabEx G-eau-thermie Profonde contributes to renewable energy development by informing and advancing the current scientific understanding of deep geothermal reservoirs and by exploring new technologies for geothermal energy exploitation. To do this, we invest in research, education, and observation initiatives, as well bolster those academic and industrial partnerships that focus on deep geothermal energy.

This collaborative project was established in 2012 as part of the French Ministry of Research and Education’s Laboratories of Excellence Initiative.

Led by the University of Strasbourg, the LabEx G-eau-thermie Profonde brings together a wide variety of academic and industrial players to solve some of the most pertinent and outstanding problems related to the exploitation of Enhanced Geothermal Systems. Our current industrial partners include Electricité de Strasbourg, Storengy, and Total. The Industrial Chair for Deep Geothermal Energy was established in 2014 to manage our industrial collaborations.

Funding

The LabEx G-eau-thermie Profonde has received 3 000 000€ over 8 years from the French National Research Agency (ANR).

Through this Industrial Chair, our industrial partners have co-funded collaborative research projects, PhD theses, and service contracts.

As part of the COGEOS consortium, our long-standing industrial partners – Electricité de Strasbourg and Electricité de Strasbourg Géothermie – have funded 1 700 000€ in research activity. In donating nearly 400 000€ to the Foundation of the University of Strasbourg, they have also sponsored communication initiatives on fundamental research related to deep geothermal energy.
